The first installment of the new Faculty Book Series in the Humanities took place on Thursday, November 28, at Stern College for Women. This series brings together members of the faculties of Yeshiva College and Stern College to discuss a recent publication. Each event takes the form of a dialogue between the book’s author and a colleague from another discipline. In this case, Dr. Rachel Mesch, associate professor of French and chair of Yeshiva College’s department of languages, literatures & cultures, interviewed Dr. Jeffrey Freedman, associate professor of history. Freedman’s critically acclaimed book, Books Without Borders in Enlightenment Europe: French Cosmopolitanism and German Literary Markets, was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in May 2012. After the event, Tammie Senders, a Stern College history major, said she “enjoyed spending time with students and professors who all have a shared passion for the humanities.” The series is meant to strengthen a sense of intellectual community among faculty members as they present their work, while helping students to gain a better understanding of the humanities and the kinds of research it generates. In her introductory remarks, Mesch noted that Freedman’s title provides a fitting description of the series, which aims to collapse boundaries between disciplines and also campuses. The series will alternate between uptown and downtown campuses and will reconvene in the spring semester with discussions surrounding recent publications by Professors Debra Kaplan and Jess Olson.
