Hendricks Publishes Second Edition of Guide for Social Work Field Education

hendricks bookDr. Carmen Ortiz Hendricks, the Dorothy and David I. Schachne Dean of Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Work, recently published the second edition of Learning to Teach, Teaching to Learn: A Guide for Social Work Education (Council on Social Work Education Press 2013). In the new edition, Hendricks and her co-authors Jeanne Bertrand Finch of Stony Brook University, State University of New York, and Cheryl L. Franks of Columbia University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, expand the reach of the original 2005 guide to highlight the skills field instructors need to convey the art and science of professional social practice in the context of competency-based education. "Different times demand a new look at field education, how it is taught and how it is learned," said Hendricks. "We need to address social and economic injustice and help our students understand how to apply a human rights framework to their practice. Social work students are called upon to be advocated and organizers as much as clinicians and managers of increasingly diverse client populations and communities - we hope this text helps them prepare for the brave new world of social work."
