Shires Publishes Essays, Edits Volume

Shires, David and Ruth Gottesman Professor and Chair of the English Department at Stern College, recently edited and wrote the preface for Victorians Reading the Romantics: Essays by U. C. Knoepflmacher (Ohio State University Press), a volume which offers a new perspective on the publishing career of her husband, a leading critic of 19th-century British novels and poetry. In July, Shires’s work on Victorian book illustration was presented at the triennial conference of the International Association of University Professors of English, held at the University of London. Shires has also published a review of  Thomas Hardy’s Brains: Psychology, Neurology, and the Imagination by Suzanne Keen in the next issue of Novel: A Forum on Fiction, as well as a review of Jewish Feeling: Difference and Affect in Nineteenth-Century Jewish Women's Writing by Richa Dwor in the journal Victorian Studies. Her essay on William Makepeace Thackeray’s self-illustrated novel Vanity Fair will be published in Handbook of the English Novel (De Gruyter).
