Tuesday, April 5th, 2011
Dr. Nancy Beckerman and Dr. Charles Auerbach, senior Wurzweiler faculty, have had their lupus study accepted for publication in
the Journal of Multidisciplinary Health Care, a top-tier international journal with a readership that comprises all health care team disciplines.
The research study, “Psychosocial dimensions of SLE: Implications for the Health Care Team”, is the largest of its kind to deal with the psychological impact of living with lupus in the United States. This cross-sectional study of 378 patients clinically diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) from the SLE Lupus Foundation in New York City had a threefold purpose: further identifying and clarifying the unique psychosocial challenges for those living with lupus; distinguishing which socio-demographic variables impact the lives of lupus patients; and identifying challenges of SLE medication regimens. The article aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for SLE patients and health care providers working with this cohort.
The second phase of study will expand the sample to 500 participants—including SLE patients at Montefiore Medical Center, AECOM Rheumatology clinics and Jacobi Hospital—and will examine issues of the psychosocial impact of SLE illness, as well as health disparities among different races and ethnicities.
