Wachtell’s Book Finalist in Connecticut Book Awards

A book recently published by Dr. Cynthia Wachtell, director of the Stern College for Women S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program and research associate professor of American studies, has been named a non-fiction finalist in the 2011 Connecticut Book Awards. According to its Web site, the award is intended to “celebrate books, writers and readers who engender and sustain the life of the imagination and to highlight authors, illustrators, printers, publishers and the literary heritage of the State of Connecticut.” Wachtell’s book, War No More, offers an important new interpretation of American antiwar writing and explores the antiwar sentiments of literary giants such as Melville, Twain, Whitman, Hawthorne and Others.

Dratch Publishes Article in Hakirah

Rabbi Mark Dratch, instructor of Jewish history, literature, and philosophy at Yeshiva College, published an article in the latest issue of Hakirah, The Flatbush Journal of Jewish Law and Thought (Vol. 12), entitled, “Honoring Abusive Parents.” The article deals with the religious obligations of abused children toward their parents, including whether they are obligated to observe traditional mourning rituals such as shiva and kaddish.

Schwartz Presents at New York City Higher Education Taskforce on Student Wellness and Anti-Bullying Workshop

Dr. Victor Schwartz, university dean of students at Yeshiva University, delivered a presentation entitled “Legal and Ethical Issues in College Mental Health” at a workshop of the same name hosted by the New York City Higher Education Taskforce on Student Wellness and Anti-Bullying. The workshop discussed the roles and perspectives of students, parents, clinicians and administrators in college health challenges and suggested different approaches to a variety of situations.
