Sarmiento and the United States

Please join us for this week's luncheon at 12 PM in the Honors Lounge, featuring Dr. Michael Aaron Rockland, professor of American Studies at Rutgers University. He will speak on the topic of "Sarmiento and the United States". This is the first of two lectures on the topic of The United States and New York through the eyes of 19th Century Hispanic WritersDomingo Faustino Sarmiento was an Argentine intellectual, educator, writer, statesman, and the seventh president of Argentina, elected in absentia while he was serving as the Ambassador the United States from 1865-1868. Come hear a discussion about a view of the United States after the Civil War from the outside, and his connections to the intelligencia of the day including Horace Mann, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Barnard, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, among others.
