A Trip to Jazz at Lincoln Center

On Saturday, January 31st, 18 Honors students plus Prof. Cwilich and Dr. Gellens ventured out into a cold night to hear a performance by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis.  The program, titled “Duke, Dizzy, Trane & Mingus: Jazz Titans,” consisted of arrangements by members of the JALC Orchestra of classic compositions by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus.  Virtually all of these compositions drew on  the Afro-Cuban, Caribbean and Latin American musical traditions and scanned the period c. 1935-1965.

With its Music Director and lead trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis, providing often humorous but always informed commentary from the bandstand, the Honors Program was treated to some superb musicianship amidst a capacity crowd at NYC’s premier venue for jazz.  Wonderful!
