The New World of Online Education

On November 11th, the Honors Program dedicated our weekly luncheon to the discussion of the brave new world of online education.  Professor Akiva Covitz, the Executive Director of YU Global and former vice-president of edX, and Dr. Steven Fine, whose new online course on the Arch of Titus will soon have its debut in Coursera, led the conversation with their experiences in the field.

Prof. Covitz discussed the kind of audience that online education reaches.  Among the millions of learners worldwide who benefit from online education, most don't do it for academic credit.  Prof. Covitz introduced Coursera, a venture backed for-profit educational technology company that offers massive open online courses (MOOCs) and works with universities and organizations to make some of their courses available online.  He mentioned the online course that he had taught over the summer, in which the lectures and materials were online, and he interacted with students from all over the world live.  Dr. Fine, who had been asked by Prof. Covitz to do a Coursera course on the Arch of Titus, presented a video about his project.
