JV Softball Update

by Akiva Richmond ('19) This past week, the MTA JV Softball team continued their season with games against Hillel, Maor, Frisch, and JEC. In the first game of a double header on Sunday, the Lions lost to Hillel. In the second game of the double header, this time against Maor, the Lions fell behind 9-2 before the fifth inning when they rallied to score eight runs to take a 10-9 lead. Unfortunately, Maor scored two more runs in the sixth inning and won 11-10. The next day, the Lions were hungry for victory and took on Frisch. Frisch started off strong with four runs in the first inning. MTA came up to bat in the bottom of the inning and cut the lead in half. Later in the game, one of the Frisch batters hit the ball into deep right-center field, but Coby Sorotzkin ('19) ran it down and made an incredible catch. After another MTA run, Chaim Weinstein ('18) came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded and one out. He smacked the ball to deep right-center field for a grand slam to put MTA up 7-4. Going into the bottom of the last inning, the score was tied at 9 and MTA came up to bat needing only one run to win. Zachary Gurwitz ('18) led the inning off with a single. After two more hits by Coby Sorotzkin and Gabe Isaacs ('18), MTA had the bases loaded with only one out. Zeve Kornwasser ('18) then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring the winning run, and MTA won 10-9. On Thursday, the Lions played against JEC. MTA, as the away team, started off the game scoring five runs in the first inning, one of which was on a solo home run by Daniel Landa ('19). It only took JEC two innings to catch up and regain the lead, but MTA regained the led in the fourth inning and never looked back. The MTA bats were on fire, scoring 12 runs in total to beat JEC 12-8. Special shout-outs to Eitan Warburg ('19) who played an incredible shortstop all week, and Meir Uretsky ('18), MTA's starting pitcher, who ended the week with a strikeout to complete the game vs. JEC. The JV Softball team has one more game against SAR after Pesach and are hoping to get both a win and a spot in the playoffs.
