MTA Robotics Readies for Battle

51c6deb5-2c12-4739-92d8-d60c403ba827 by Benny Mermel ('19) Fresh from its victory last month, Lionotics, the MTA Robotics team, is looking forward to its tournament this Sunday, February 19th, at Dalton School. Lionotics made MTA history in January when it took 4th place out of over 20 schools participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier at Francis Lewis High School in Queens. The team spent weeks designing and creating a multi-functional robot for the task set out for the competitors. The tasks included autonomously (without a driver) throwing balls into a hoop and pushing color-coded buttons, then remotely doing the same and placing or throwing a yoga ball into a bigger hoop. MTA tied for the most points acquired with 140 scored over the course of the competition. An added bonus was that the team had the opportunity to meet two other Jewish schools that had robotics teams present, Magen David and the Yeshiva of Flatbush. The Lionotics plan to maintain contact with the the other teams for possible collaboration in the future. The team placed significantly higher than in any previous year, something we hope will be a continuing trend. Go Lionotics!
