I do not believe the longevity enjoyed by the Ashkenazi Jews in this study is based on genetics. Observant Jews would be expected to follow the diet prescribed in the Torah. This diet is the paradigm of an iron-restricted diet. Iron accumulates in our bodies because iron intake from the typical western diet greatly exceeds loss and, as with body fat, we have no way to excrete the excess. Iron in excess of physiologic requirements creates oxidative stress that, over time, damages many types of cells and tissues. A number of studies have shown that high levels of body iron are associated with disease risk and mortality. Other studies have shown that low levels of iron in older individuals are protective. A randomized trial of iron reduction in older men showed significantly reduced mortality, and risk of vascular disease and cancer with lower iron levels. The Framingham follow-up study showed that the major cause of rising iron in an elderly population is supplemental iron – in “fortified” (read “adulterated”) foods and vitamin preparations. The first step would be to require proper labeling of such preparations with proper warnings. Exploration of relevant characteristics of the Torah diet would follow.
