Student A Cappella Group’s “Candlelight” Video Goes Viral
Just in time for Chanukah, Yeshiva University’s popular student a cappella group, the Maccabeats, have released their latest single, “Candlelight.”
Their music video, edited by YU alumnus and former presidential fellow, Uri Westrich, has quickly gone viral on YouTube, amassing more than 2 million views, and has been featured on CBS, CNN and NBC’s Today Show.
“It’s been really exciting,” said Maccabeat Josh Jay, a Yeshiva College graduate currently enrolled at Einstein Medical School. “Before it came out, we joked about the video going viral, but I don’t think any of us expected it to be quite this popular. It’s great to be able to reach so many people and spread the message of Channukah.”

While we all love the Maccabeats (and hey, I’m friends with some of them), you should also check out this fantastic NCSY Chanukah video with hilarious pop-song parodies as well! This features real-life New Yorkers getting into holiday spirit and showing off their movies to Six13′s great tunes.
Check it out here.

Why did they use 10 candles to light the menorah in the video and not use the shamus?
Thiss is soooo cool! I didn’t realize how far it went till my Russian Kiruv friends posted it on their fb page…they’re COMPLETELY YU unrelated! Thats soooooooo cool congrads keep going!
This is my fav. song!!! Keep it up!!! …I flip my latkes in the air sometimes… singin ay-oh spin the dreidel…
This is a great song that will be remembered for years for Hannukah (or Channukah). Great song and great group, hope they continue to do well with their music. They used ten candles because it was easier than using the “helper candle” and having to put it back after they were done lighting the last candle.
My 7th-8th Hebrew class wants to include a dance to “Candlelight” in a play they are writing. Can we have permission to do that and is it possible to get a pdf of the music and lyrics?

the cbs version sounded a bit crowded
I had my Bar Mitvah in 1967 and those young people put a huge smile on my face. Shalom Y’all
Great job! Thank you for the explaination why 10 candles were used. The You Tube video is much better quality than the TV stations.
