YU Hosts 200 Jewish Athletes for Annual Wrestling Tournament; Shabbaton to Feature Former WBA Champ Yuri Foreman
Yeshiva University will host the 18th annual Henry Wittenberg Wrestling Invitational Friday, February 15 through Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Max Stern Athletic Center on YU’s uptown Wilf Campus. The program, which is sponsored entirely by Yeshiva University, will bring together 200 wrestlers from 14 yeshiva high schools across the country.
In addition to a first-rate, professionally run wrestling competition, the long weekend will also include a Shabbaton complete with communal meals, spirited games and inspirational lectures from special guests, including Yuri Foreman, a former World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight champion who is now studying to be an Orthodox rabbi.
“This weekend is the highlight of the Yeshiva High School wrestling calendar,” said Rabbi Kenneth Brander, the David Mitzner Dean of YU’s Center for the Jewish Future. “It is an opportunity for young Jewish athletes to bond with each other, to be inspired to elevate their wrestling performances and grow spiritually, and to begin thinking about what will become of their wrestling careers after high school.” Read the rest of this entry…
