Building a Lifelong Network

At Sixth Annual Gathering, YU Real Estate Professionals Host Conversation With Related CEO Jeff Blau On June 24, the Yeshiva University Real Estate Professionals hosted Jeff Blau, CEO of Related Companies, in conversation with Michael Stoler, president of New York Real Estate TV, for a special armchair conversation hosted by Yeshiva University Trustee and Real Estate Committee Member J. Philip Rosen '78YC. Over 150 alumni and friends of YU attended the event at Weil Gotshal & Manges, which marked the YU Real Estate Group's sixth annual gathering. As the sun set over the midtown skyline and the trees of Central Park, Blau shared with Stoler how he initially became involved with the real estate industry. His first involvement with Related Companies began with a conversation he had with Steven Ross, then-CEO of the company, at a University of Michigan conference with Steven Ross. Ross mentioned to Blau that he would be flying down to New York on his private plane, so Blau said he coincidentally also needed to go to New York. Looking back on that conversation, “I had no reason fly to New York, but by the time I landed in NY, I had a job," he said. Since then he has grown to become one of the most accomplished and influential real estate CEOs in the business, with past projects that have included the Time Warner Center. After his conversation with Stoler, Blau presented his company’s plans and progress on their newest project, Hudson Yards, a multi-billion dollar plan to build up Manhattan's Midtown West, which will be the largest development in the City's history. Expected to be fully completed by 2024, the project's goal is to create an entirely new neighborhood from the ground up, combining the Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea areas, two of Manhattan’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. Blau intends Hudson Yards to become a new center for culture, business and entertainment in New York City. "With office space and residential living, restaurants, access to the Seven subway train, large courtyards, and expansive grassy areas and other public spaces, Hudson Yards is expected to be the new heart of downtown," he said. After Blau’s presentation, those who attended the event had the chance to network, catch up and discuss opportunities in the real estate market at a reception hosted by Meridian Capital Group. "We open these events to our students so they know that in the future they will have opportunity to take part in activities like this, to take advantage of the interconnectivity of our community," said Joshua Muss '58YUHS, ’62YC, chair of the YU Real Estate Committee and member of the Yeshiva University Board of Trustees. In addition to the YU Real Estate Professionals, which is co-chaired by Marc Kwestel '87YC and Bruce Schanzer '91YC, '93C, there are alumni groups for those working on Wall Street or in technology, who all hold various meetings throughout the year to provide more opportunities and connections for alumni and current students. “The YU network has really helped me move forward in my career professionally, and I would like to offer that to other students coming out of YU and to stay connected to the network," said Basyah Klyman '11S '14C, who attended the event. Among the many business professionals and alumni, several students and recent graduates came to learn more about the real estate industry and see the potential connections that are available to YU alumni. "It’s a great opportunity as a recent graduate to see the strong network that Yeshiva has and how active it is,” said Gilad Rosenberg '15SB. “It’s exciting to see what’s next.” For more information about the YU Real Estate Professionals, please contact: yurealestategroup@yu.edu.
