Mourning the Temple

Yeshiva University's Center for the Jewish Future Partners with Orthodox Union to Offer Tisha B'Av Programming As the Jewish calendar passes through the summer months, the period colloquially known as “The Three Weeks” is being observed through various stages of mourning over the destruction of the two Temples and other Jewish tragedies. The period began with Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, the Fast of the 17th Day of Tammuz, and the laws of mourning will intensify during the Nine Days beginning with Rosh Chodesh Av on Friday, July 17. The Three Weeks will culminate with the 24-hour-plus fast of Tisha B’Av on Saturday night, July 25 through Sunday, July 26. Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future (CJF) offers many resources to prepare for these weeks of mourning. Once again this year, the CJF has partnered with the Orthodox Union to produce a DVD consisting of shiurim [Torah lectures] to bring deeper meaning and spirituality to Tisha B’Av. The video will feature presentations by Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter, University Professor of Jewish Thought and History at YU and YU CJF Senior Scholar; and Rabbi Shalom Rosner, maggid shiur at OU Torah, spiritual leader of Kehillat Nofei Hashemesh and rebbe at Yeshivat Reishit Yerushalayim, both based in Beit Shemesh, Israel. The DVD, coordinated by Rabbi Robert Shur of YUTorah.org, is being sent to all congregations that request it online in advance at www.oucommunity.org. On YUTorah.org, hundreds of shiurim on topics related to mourning for the Temple from renowned educators around the world are available for those seeking to learn more during this time. Those looking for inspiration can subscribe to a daily email with a short video message during the Three Weeks from Yeshiva University’s Torah Mitzion Kollel in Chicago here. And the downloadable Benjamin and Rose Berger Tisha b’Av To-Go features more than 40 pages of divrei Torah on Tisha b’Av-related topics from YU faculty and staff. On the day of Tisha b’Av itself, Jews from around the world can join YU for a special webcast featuring Rabbi Schachter and Rabbi Dovid Gottlieb, a senior faculty member at Ohr Somayach, for an all-day analysis of the kinot [lamentations] said on Tisha b’Av and a deeper look into the nature of the day.
