School of Jewish Education Names New Dean

Dr. David Schnall Announces Retirement as Azrieli Dean; Dr. Rona Novick Appointed Successor Dr. David Schnall, dean of Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, has announced that he will step down from his position following the 2013-14 academic year to spend more time with his family and pursue his writing and research interests. After a brief sabbatical, Schnall will resume teaching and publishing at YU.

“In recognition of his extraordinary achievements and contributions to Yeshiva University, I have decided to name Dr. Schnall University Professor of Jewish Culture and Society,” said President Richard M. Joel. Schnall, who has served as dean of the school for the past 13 years, will be replaced by Dr. Rona Novick, effective July 1, 2014. “I am delighted that Dr. Rona Novick has accepted my invitation to serve as the dean of Azrieli,” said President Joel. “She has been an invaluable asset to our institution, serving as director of the Fanya Gottesfeld Heller Doctoral Program prior to her new appointment. Concurrently, she will hold the Raine and Stanley Silverstein Chair in Professional Ethics and Values.”

Novick received her PhD from Rutgers University and completed her doctoral internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. She developed the Alliance for School Mental Health at North-Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center and served as its director for eight years, authoring the BRAVE bully prevention program for schools. She is recognized for her expertise in behavior management and child behavior therapy and has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences, focusing on her research interests in parenting, child anxiety disorders, social-emotional learning, and the behavior and development of young children. As dean, Novick will lead a team of educators who will focus on imagining the future of Jewish education, working closely with Provost-elect Dr. Selma Botman. “As we welcome Dr. Novick to her new position, we also offer our deep sense of gratitude and appreciation to Dr. David Schnall and look forward to his continuing involvement in the life of the University,” said President Joel.
