Professor Gurock Book Launch!

Please join us to celebrate the release of Jeffrey S. Gurock's The Jews of Harlem: The Rise, Decline, and Revival of a Jewish Community. During World War I, Harlem was the home of the second largest Jewish community in America. But in the 1920s, Jewish residents began to scatter to other parts of Manhattan, to the outer boroughs, and to other cities. Now, nearly a century later, Jews are returning uptown to a gentrified Harlem and walk the streets of a renewed uptown with fellow New Yorkers of many races, creeds and nationalities. The Jews of Harlem follows Jews into, out of, and back into this renowned urban neighborhood over the course of a century and a half. Join us on October 30 at JCC Harlem for a discussion with author Jeffrey S. Gurock, Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University, in conversation with Rabbi David Gedzelman, President and CEO of The Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life. Reception to follow. This event is co-sponsored by NYU Press, JCC Harlem, and the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University For more information click here.
