Builder Battle

Eco Rep, Rivki Weiss worked in conjunction with the Environmental Society to create an event called Builder Battles, an eco-friendly building competition, on May 1, 2013 as a part of Earth Week. The goal of the event was to educate students on what is recyclable in New York City and to demonstrate how fun it can be to reuse, reduce, and recycle. In order to raise this awareness, teams were only allowed to use materials which are recyclable in New York to build their masterpieces.  The teams were provided with some basic supplies-newspapers, cardboard, pizza boxes, plastic bottles, and more. However participants were encouraged to collect their own recyclable materials to use in the competition.

Seven teams of 4 to 5 people were provided with the theme of the building competition:  “All Around the City”.  Teams were encouraged to be creative and go all out and they did not disappoint! One team made a big poster, titled “Humans of New York”, comprised of many pictures from various magazines forming one big face. Another team, Team Upcycle, gathered many different recyclables and created a replica of the Atlas Statue in Rockefeller Center.

The winning team’s project “Humans of New York” was chosen and the YU Museum will be looking at the masterpieces to consider displaying them in the museum!

The event was a great success! Everyone had fun and learned a lot more about what can be recycled and multiple participants came up to ask about when the next event would take place.

Congratulation to the winning team! Devora Schloss, Ariella Muller, Rachael Siegel, and Margalit Mattuck!
