New Year, New Professional Networking Opportunities
YU’s professional networking groups, namely the YU Wall Street Group, Real Estate Professionals Group, and Accounting and Financial Planning Network, are kicking into high gear this winter and spring with events to benefit both professionals and students. Help current students navigate their careers or network with fellow professionals at one of the following upcoming events. Some events sell out quickly so be sure not to miss any announcements by joining the groups on LinkedIn here and here.
The Career Center is partnering with our professional networks and the Office of Alumni Affairs to present programs to help current students prepare for careers. On February 11th, the Sy Syms School of Business Real Estate Club will co-sponsor a Real Estate Forum for students who wish to learn about the field. Alumni on the panel include Danny Heumann, Meridian Capital; Jason Muss ’93YC, Muss Development; Adam Parkoff ’02SSB, ’08C, The Parkoff Organization; and Michael Davis ’02SSB, The Plymouth Group.
Alumni lawyers will have their turn to guide students on February 25th at Meet Your Mentors Night. The panel discussion will focus on the importance of networking in the legal field and will be followed by a mentor reception. Mentors include Joel Strauss ’86YC, ’92C, partner at Kaplan Fox; Amanda Nussbaum ’95S, Partner at Proskauer Rose LLP; and Mark Klein ’88YC, Global General Counsel, Infrastructure and Private Equity, at UBS.
Daniel Danesh ’13YC, co-president of YU’s Jacob Hecht Pre-Law Society, said, “We are appreciative that Yeshiva’s alumni – many of them incredibly successful – are willing to meet and offer guidance to ambitious students. That is what inspired the pre-law society to create this mentoring event, and we look forward to establishing long-term professional relationships with alumni who can assist us in our career goals.”
If you would like to participate in the lawyers mentoring program (they are looking for additional women mentors in particular) please contact Ariella Hellman, Pre-Law Adviser on the Wilf Campus at ariella.hellman@yu.edu.
For those students pursuing careers on Wall Street, the Wall Street Connections event on March 4th will feature professionals in the financial industry to teach them the tools of the trade and network informally with students following the presentation.
For seasoned professionals (and newly minted ones, too!) there will be opportunities to learn about current issues in their fields and network with fellow professionals. The YU Accounting and Financial Planning Network presents “Post the Fiscal Cliff: Financial Planning Strategies for 2013 and Beyond.” This timely event is hosted by Anchin Block & Anchin LLP in Manhattan, with featured speakers including E. Richard Baum, CPA, J.D., Tax Partner at Anchin Block & Anchin LLP; Paul Gevertzman, CPA, J.D., Tax Partner, Anchin Block & Anchin LLP; E. George Teixeira, CPA, Tax Partner, Anchin Block & Anchin LLP; and Dr. S. Abraham Ravid, Professor of Finance at YU’s Sy Syms School of Business. Dr. Ravid was recently profiled in an alumni e-newsletter. Topics include estate planning; carried interest; and the overall impact of the fiscal cliff on the economy going forward.
Steven Kahn ’95SB, event host, said, “Anchin is hosting this YU alumni event because we feel that it is truly important to give back to the communities where we live, learn and practice our professions. We intend to share insights and tips on how to best prepare for the changing tax laws and for the future in general. The event will also be a great opportunity for attendees to network.”
