Yeshiva University socio-linguist, Dr. Joshua A. Fishman, received an honorary certificate of membership to the Euskaltzaindia, or Royal Academy of the Basque Language, for his contribution to the struggle on behalf of “minoritized” languages on Octoober 3. A Distinguished University Research Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences, Dr. Fishman is an international leader in the fields of sociolinquistics and bilingual education, and has undertaken several trips to Basque Country to assist with language projects. Fishman’s empathy with the Basques stems from his childhood in 1930s and 40s Philadelphia, where he observed the reactionary measures of both his school and Jewish camp against fascist Spain and their concurrent support for the Basques.
