Ephraim Kanarfogel, the E. Billi Ivry Professor of Jewish History at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and at Stern College for Women, has been named a co-chair of the academic advisory committee of the Foundation for Jewish Culture, along with Prof. David Myers of UCLA. The co-chairs oversee the evaluation process for the prestigious Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship program, which relies on a select group of outstanding scholars of Jewish Studies world-wide to make recommendations. Established in 1960, the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship has awarded over 600 grants, many to leading lights of Jewish studies, including Jonathan Sarna, Ruth Wisse, David Ellenson and others. The co-chairs also serve as academic advisors to the Foundation’s other scholarship programs and are ex-officio members of the Foundation’s board of directors. This volume, which has its origins in an international conference held at Yeshiva University, consists of fifteen studies by leading Judaic Studies scholars in North America and Israel (including seven faculty members at YU) that treat a series of topics and issues which stand at the center of the study of medieval Jewish intellectual history and allied fields at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. Using Rashi and Maimonides as intellectual templates, several of these essays seek to examine aspects of their writings in particular, while others provide a broader comparative view between the rabbinic cultures of Ashkenaz and Sefarad. All the of the studies feature close textual readings as well as insights into the methodology of the key figures that they treat.
