Sy Syms Angel and Venture Capital Investing Class Takes Students Into the Field

Syms School of Business adjunct professors Moshe Bellows ’90YC, and Bruce Taragin ’89YC made learning as real-world as possible for their Angel and Venture Capital Investing students this term. The two hosted a number of financial industry professionals guest speakers in class and offered students several opportunities to speak with people in their field outside of the classroom. Most recently, the professors and their students were guests at the 23rd Annual Sohn Investment Conference in New York City on April 23, where they heard presentations from leading investment and venture capital professionals on timely issues for the industry. This year’s speakers included David Einhorn, president of Greenlight Capital; Jeffrey Gundlach, CEO of DoubleLine Capital LP; and Nathaniel August, president of Mangrove Partners. The event was hosted by The Sohn Conference Foundation which hosts financial industry events to benefit research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. Later that week, on April 27, a group from Bellows’ and Taragin’s class visited the new Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. The students were guests of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, a partnership between Cornell University and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Students heard about the partnership's graduate business entrepreneurship programs and took a tour of the campus which opened in 2017. “I am extremely grateful to Mr. Taragin and Mr. Bellows for the effort that they put in this semester," said Michael Strauss, interim dean of Sy Syms School of Business. "The student feedback is very positive. Students are learning firsthand from highly experienced and successful leaders in the venture capital world how to analyze companies, how to value businesses and how to make investment choices. We hope to expand our offerings in this area."
