Dr. Matthew Cuellar, assistant professor at Wurzweiler School of Social Work, attended the School Security Conference at American University in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 21 to 23. His conference recommendations will be produced and reported to the Spencer Foundation (which funded the presenters’ attendance) and Congress.

The conference brought leaders in the field of school safety together to discuss gaps in research and best approaches for reducing racial/ethnic disparities when implementing school safety practices. His presentation discussed the effects of school security measures on school personnel, collaboration amongst professionals within the school setting and how school social workers can play an invaluable role in developing school safety policy and promoting safe schools in the United States. He plans to use his experiences to advocate for a school social work interest group focused on policy development concerning school safety.
