Wachtell Publishes on Ellen Newbold La Motte

Dr. Cynthia WachtellDr. Cynthia Wachtell, research associate professor of American studies and director of the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program at Stern College for Women, has published an essay on Ellen Newbold La Motte in Harvard Magazine. Subtitled “Brief life of a bold activist: 1873-1961,” Dr. Wachtell outlines the extraordinary life led by La Motte, ranging from being the author of a devastating portrait of war in The Backwash of War: The Human Wreckage of the Battlefield as Witnessed by an American Hospital Nurse to being a highly successful investor in the stock market, saying that “The Stock Exchange… brings me quite a nice return. I am having lots of fun with it.” Dr. Wachtell also had a review article published about La Motte in Johns Hopkins Magazine, titled “The ‘literary high explosives’ of Ellen La Motte’s ‘Backwash of War’.” Dr. Wachtell has published extensively on La Motte’s life: Wachtell Garners Attention for Ellen N.
