On Sunday, May 1, 2022, The Jewish Heritage Alliance invited Dr. Ronnie Perelis to present his research on the religious creativity of Joseph Lumbroso, a 16th-century Mexican Crypto-Jewish poet and religious thinker, otherwise known as Luis de Carvajal, the younger. (Dr. Perelis is the Chief Rabbi Dr. Isaac Abraham and Jelena (Rachel) Alcalay Associate Professor of Sephardic Studies at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and the director of the Rabbi Arthur Schneier Program for International Affairs.) Dr. Perelis was joined by the documentary filmmaker Isaac Artenstein who presented parts of his fascinating film, The Long Journey Home: the Hidden Jews of the Southwest. This talk was part of a series on Sephardic history for the JHA’s global audience. Learn more about the topic and watch the talk on YouTube. In other Carvajal-related news, Dr. Perelis wrote a deep dive for Tablet all about this fascinating New World thinker.
