Stephen Greenblatt and James Shapiro on The Merchant of Venice

It seems that Daniel Sullivan's new version of The Merchant of Venice--now being performed at the Broadhurst Theater--has occasioned at least one interesting discussion. Stephen Greenblatt tackles Sullivan's approach to Shakespeare's classic play in a recent edition of The New York Review of Books, and James Shapiro--who will soon visit the Honors Program--clarifies a point in Greenblatt's article, showing both an acute sense of the history of performance of Merchant and a refined sense of civility. Take a look at the article PDF below, don't miss Dr. Shapiro's visit on December 1st, and look forward to RSVP information for our outing to see this play performed.
