It seems that Daniel Sullivan’s new version of The Merchant of Venice–now being performed at the Broadhurst Theater–has occasioned at least one interesting discussion. Stephen Greenblatt tackles Sullivan’s approach to Shakespeare’s classic play in a recent edition of The New York Review of Books, and James Shapiro–who will soon visit the Honors Program–clarifies a point in Greenblatt’s article, showing both an acute sense of the history of performance of Merchant and a refined sense of civility. Take a look at the article PDF below, don’t miss Dr. Shapiro’s visit on December 1st, and look forward to RSVP information for our outing to see this play performed.
