MTA Students Help in Sandy Relief Efforts

by Mordy Yager ('13) and Eli Eisenman ('13) This past Tuesday, the shiurim of Rabbi Ciment, Rabbi Soniker, and Rabbi Axelrod traveled to Far Rockaway to help with Hurricane Sandy relief. The students were joined, for a period of time, by YU President Richard Joel. With the help of the organization Achiezer, based in Yeshiva Sh'or Yoshuv, the students were sent to different houses that were devastated by Sandy. The shiurim were able to experience a firsthand encounter of the destruction caused by the storm. One of the student groups was sent to the house of a single mother who had developmentally disabled children; the house had major water damage in the basement. The students bravely went into the basement filled with water in an effort to salvage as many major items belonging to the family. The students helped remove large  items like mattresses, air conditioners, and even a refrigerator. In addition to the trip being an amazing chessed opportunity, the students were able to feel a further appreciation for everything they have after seeing firsthand the suffering that others are going through.
