MTA Celebrates Israel @ 66

by Mathew Albert ('17)
On Tuesday, MTA celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut with our annual chagigah. Afterdavening, we recited the chatzi Hallel following words of introduction from Rabbi Taubes, and in the later part of the morning, the students had fun enjoying spirited dancing and passionate singing. The ruach could be heard from blocks away.   The students also had the z'chus to hear a speech from one of Yeshiva University's Roshei Yeshiva, Rabbi Meir Goldwicht, who grew up in Eretz Yisrael. Rabbi Goldwicht's derashah pertained to the connection between Yom HaAtzmaut, the end of Pesach, Sefiras Ha'omer, and Shavuos.   The day was topped off by classes in which the teachers made a connection between their particular classroom topics and Eretz Yisrael. One example was Tzahal-training gym classes (See below for more classes connected to the day). If one wants to witness the passion for Eretz Yisrael at MTA, Yom HaAtzmaut is the day to come and see!
Mrs. Siegfried's English class read an excerpt from Amos Oz's memoir "Tale of Love and Darkness" about the author's experience as a young boy in Jerusalem listening to a broadcast of the UN vote on the Partition of Palestine and the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem in 1948.
