Phillip Meyer Offers CPR Course to Teachers and Students

by Mr. Murray Sragow
During the week of May 10, students and faculty were offered a CPR course designed to prepare them to be in position to save a life.  The course, offered by senior Philip Meyer (Philip is a licensed and practicing first responder) through the Arista Honor Society, used the curriculum and resources of the American Heart Association and resulted in certification by the AHA for those who passed the test at its conclusion.  The course covered chest compressions, breathing through mouth-to-mouth and through an intermediary device, and the use of an automated external defribrillator.  In order to enable Philip to work closely with each student, the course was repeated many times over the week, each time with no more than 5 or 6 students.  The students who attended (both faculty and students were students for this program) gained skills and confidence in their ability to make a difference in a life threatening situation. It is reasonable to argue that failure to be prepared for a life threatening situation would, if one occurs, cause the unprepared person to violate the mitzvah of "lo taamod al dam re'echa" (Don't stand idly by your neighbor's blood).  Thanks to Philip Meyer, a large group of MTA students and faculty can now be confident that they will not violate this mitzvah if the case arises.
