JV Basketball Lions Win Rubenstein Memorial Basketball Tournament!

by Eitan Warburg ('19) 86699f79-7d19-4609-91d3-9cc5bd2f96bf It did not make a difference what conference or even what country the MTA Lions' opponent came from, the Lions would not be denied a championship. Last Tuesday, the JV Basketball team opened up the annual Rubenstein Memorial Basketball Tournament by facing a formidable HAFTR Hawks team. Led by a 15-point first half performance by Eitan Warburg ('19) and a five-for-five three-point shooting night by sharp-shooter Yoni Rothberg ('19), the Lions won the game and moved on to the next round. Two days later in Long Island, the Lions faced off against the DRS Wildcats. The game was close throughout, but Eitan Pfeiffer's ('19) offensive performance made all the difference as the Lions defeated DRS in a nail biter. Round 3 of the tournament moved over to Riverdale on Sunday where the Lions faced an Israeli team from Modiin! Modiin opened up the game playing a very physical game, which gave them an early ten-point lead. Shortly thereafter, however, MTA settled down and narrowed the gap to two. In the second half, the Lions awoke. Isaiah Anderson ('19) and David Saginor ('19) led the team's defensive effort, blocking multiple shots and grabbing almost every rebound. The Lions won the game 67-57 and were rewarded with a championship match-up against the top-seeded Frisch Cougars. The Lions started out sluggish, trailing by 10 early on. However, the Lions had an 18 point swing by halftime led by some great assists by Hudy Weiss ('19) and solid shooting by both Eitan Pfeiffer ('19) and Eitan Warburg ('19). Both Avi Wolk ('19) and Isaiah Anderson ('19) held their own against Frisch's big men. But Frisch came back in the fourth quarter and tied the game up and overtime semmed to be a real possibility. With 7 seconds left, however, Tournament MVP Eitan Pfeiffer, was fouled and sank both free-throws to seal the game, as as MTA went on to win 50-48 and become the tournament champions. On Monday, the victorious team was rewarded with a special lunch from Subaba with Rabbi Kahn, Shuey Jacoby, and Director of Athletics Rabbi Beitler.
