MTA Tennis Team Opens Season With Dramatic Win Over Heschel

By: Gabe Isaacs ('18)
The MTA Tennis Lions opened their 2018 campaign this past Sunday evening against a formidable Heschel squad, last year's reigning division champs.  Heschel demonstrated their might early on, with two quick victories in 1st Singles and 2nd Doubles.  However, MTA got on the board soon after thanks to a crafty performance from first- time Singles player Yedidya Schechter ('19), who claimed his first Yeshiva League win in Singles 10-4.  Following Yedidya’s lead, Team Captain Gabe Isaacs ('18) regained his winning form after a slow start, en route to a gritty 10-6 victory in 2nd Singles.  That left all eyes on the remaining 1st Doubles match in a winner take all scenario.  Ariel Retter ('19) and Yosef Sullivan ('20) fought valiantly all night, battling back from deficits of 4-1 and 8-5, but still found themselves trailing 9-6 at the brink of defeat.  With their backs against the wall, they remained incredibly poised and with timely shot-making along with raucous support from their teammates, Ariel and Yosef won 3 consecutive games leveling the match at 9 games apiece.  The match went into a winner takes all tiebreaker where the intensity was palpable.  MTA ultimately triumphed 7-4, thereby pulling off a miraculous comeback victory.  “I have no fingernails left,” remarked Coach Eli Gewirtz.  "This was truly a night for the ages."  MTA hopes to continue their winning ways in their upcoming match against Hillel.
