Brody Distinguished Lecture in Economics

Alvin Roth, Harvard University Professor and Pioneer of Modern Kidney Exchange Program, to Present at April 11 Lecture Alvin Roth, Harvard University’s George Gund Professor of Economics and Business Administration, will deliver the annual Alexander Brody Distinguished Lecture in Economics at Yeshiva University on Monday April 11 at 7:30 p.m. The event, entitled “Kidney Exchange: Barter on a Large Scale, When Lives are in the Balance,” will take place at Weissberg Commons on YU’s Wilf Campus, 2495 Amsterdam Avenue, and is open to the public. Alvin Roth is one of the founders and designers of the New England Program for Kidney Exchange, which offers new life-saving options to those seeking a kidney transplant, but whose potential living donor is not a good biological "match" due to either blood type incompatibility or cross-match incompatibility. The Exchange uses a computer program to find cases where the donor in an incompatible pair can be matched to a recipient in another pair. By exchanging donors, a compatible match for both recipients may be found. Professor Roth’s research, teaching and consulting interests are in game theory, experimental economics and market design. The best known of the markets he has designed or redesigned is the National Resident Matching Program, through which approximately 20,000 doctors a year find their first employment as residents at American hospitals. He is also the chair of the American Economic Association's Ad Hoc Committee on the Job Market, which has designed a number of recent changes in the market for new Ph.D. economists. The Professor Alexander Brody Distinguished Service Lecture is presented annually by the YU Economics Department, chaired by Dr. James Kahn, the Henry and Bertha Kressel Professor of Economics at YU. It is named for Alexander Brody, a professor of economics and history who died in 1968 after a 34-year tenure at YU. Admission is free and open to the public with valid photo ID.
