For Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law graduate Kerry Hoffman, writing isn’t just a hobby—it’s a calling. She stumbled upon her passion for the trade during her undergraduate career at the College of the Holy Cross, where she majored in sociology with a concentration in gender studies. “I was taking more social science classes, which tended to have papers rather than exams,” the White Plains, NY, native said. “I realized that I really enjoyed writing because it allowed me to produce a finished product.” After earning her undergraduate degree, Hoffman entered Cardozo’s JD program in 2007 to obtain a well-respected legal education that would arm her with opportunities in and out of law. “My father is a lawyer, and after seeing the exciting path his career has taken, I knew that I wanted something similar for myself.” Hoffman served as editor-in-chief of the Cardozo Journal of Law & Gender, overseeing a staff of 42 Cardozo students while editing and publishing three journal issues comprising more than 700 pages of scholarly articles. Her student note, The Work/Family Balance: New York’s Struggle to Harmonize Domestic and Employment Spheres, was published this past fall in Volume 16, Issue 1. Prior to serving as editor-in-chief, she was a legal writing teaching assistant, aiding first-year students with legal research and writing. Hoffman gained hands-on legal experience through her work as a clinician at Bet Tzedek [House of Justice], a Cardozo-run organization that services low-income residents in Manhattan, where she represented clients on matters pertaining to disability rights, housing and estate issues. She also interned at The Family Center, a nonprofit organization that assists families affected by terminal illness, and the New York State Division of Human Rights. She served as chair of the Cardozo Student Life Committee; worked in Cardozo’s admissions office, giving tours to prospective students and assisting at events; and participated in Law Revue, Cardozo’s annual student sketch comedy show. When Hoffman wasn’t scouring through mounds of court cases, gleaning firsthand insight into the legal profession and serving as an active member of the Cardozo community, she was tapping into her entrepreneurial spirit: In October 2009, she launched thenycmenugirl.com, a blog that reviews and recommends New York restaurants. “I was getting a lot of queries from friends asking for restaurants to try, and I needed a better platform to present the information,” she said. “It became an interest of mine, and I kept up with it.” The site now gets more than 500 hits per week and Hoffman has more than 1,500 people following her on Twitter. She also writes for New York-centered Web sites NewYork.com, JoonBug.com and iheartbrunch.com. “Food writing is a chance for me to present my personality through words.” Now that Hoffman has completed her degree, she intends to continue writing while working toward her next goal: passing the New York State Bar Exam.
