U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney Speaks to YU Students

By Jacqueline Englanoff ’24S Board Member, YUPAC On Feb. 26, 2022, the Yeshiva University Political Action Club (YUPAC) hosted a Shabbaton for over one hundred student advocates on the Beren Campus. The Shabbat was filled with panel discussions, training sessions and guest speakers. The keynote address was given by U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who represents New York’s 12th congressional district, which includes YU’s Beren Campus.

Following lunch on Shabbat, Rep. Maloney visited the Beren Campus, and YU students were privileged to hear from the representative. She began by speaking about the journey that brought her to public service, recalling her early actions as an educator who advocated for program funding. She stated that this experience is what made her realize how much influence and power was held by government to make change, and so she turned to a career in public service. Rep. Maloney also spoke on her experience as a pioneering woman in politics, a career that was not common for women at the time. She was even the first New York City Council member to give birth while in office. Given the events of the past week, Rep. Maloney also took the opportunity to address the situation in Ukraine, expressing deep sympathy for the people of Ukraine while also shedding some light on the complexities that guide U.S. action. About the topic of growing anti-Semitism in the United States, Rep. Maloney brought up her long history of fighting anti-Semitism, including her Never Again Education Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation promoting Holocaust education. It was an absolute privilege for the students of YUPAC to hear from Rep. Maloney, and we are so thankful to her for taking the time to engage with and empower the leaders of tomorrow.
