Father Patrick Desbois, Keeper of the Holocaust Memories of 1.5 Million Ukranian Jews, To Deliver Rogoff Lecture At Yeshiva University on March 2

Feb 17, 2009 -- Father Patrick Desbois, a Catholic priest who singlehandedly undertook the monumental task of excavating the history of undocumented Jewish victims in the former Soviet Union, will deliver the 2009 Hillel Rogoff Annual Lecture at Yeshiva University (YU) on Monday, March 2. The program will take place at the Gerald Schottenstein Cultural Center, 239 E. 34th St. (btwn 2nd & 3rd Avenues) at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public free of charge. Using forensic evidence, eyewitness accounts, and new archival material, Father Desbois undertook a personal challenge to record and commemorate the deaths of Jews during WWII by mobile killing units that shot their captives leaving scant records of their crimes. At each location, local Ukrainians, including hundreds of children, were enlisted at gunpoint to assist with the murders. Father Desbois has dedicated himself to honoring the victims with proper burials and by bringing their stories to light. To date, he has identified over 800 mass graves and interviewed more than 900 surviving witnesses. Father Desbois became interested in the Nazi shootings after hearing the reminiscences of his French grandfather, who was a French POW held at the Rawa-Ruska forced labor camp in the Ukraine during the war along with 25,000 other French soldiers captured by the Germans. Recently, Father Desbois was awarded the 2008 Jewish Book Award for his work “The Holocaust by Bullets: A Priest’s Journey to Uncover the Truth Behind the Murder of 1.5 Million Jews.” He is also president and founder of the International Association Yahad-In-Unum which means “together” and supports dialogue between Jewish and Catholic authorities. The lecture is named for Hillel (Harry) Rogoff, an alumnus of Yeshiva University and longtime editor of the Jewish Daily Forward. It was established in 1971 through the efforts of the late YU English professor and administrator Dr. David Mirsky and members of the Rogoff family.
