Ferkauf Training Grant in Gero-Psychology Renewed

Bronx, NY, Nov 1, 2003 -- The Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology had been awarded a 3-year grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services for training in Clinical Gero-psychology. The training grant establishes Ferkauf as one of seven sites in the US, and the only site in the NY metropolitan area, to train doctoral psychology students in clinical work with the elderly. The funding, which followed a 1-year grant award from US-DHHS in the previous year, has enabled the School to offer doctoral students specialized instruction and clinical practica in gerontological psychology. Dr. Richard Zweig, who directs the newly established Ferkauf Older Adult Program, described that in an innovative effort to provide the most disadvantaged elderly with comprehensive mental health care, the program pairs psychology trainees with medical residents to optimize integrated mental health service delivery to older adults in a primary care setting. The training program is a collaborative effort of the faculty of Ferkauf, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Jacobi Hospital Medical Center.
