Ida Crown Jewish Academy Takes First Place in Wittenberg Wrestling Tournament, Toppling the Frisch School

Feb 19, 2008 -- Fifty-six seconds into the final match of Yeshiva University’s Henry Wittenberg Wrestling Invitational Tournament, the gym exploded into cheers. Avi Bromberg of the Ida Crown Jewish Academy (ICJA) pinned David Chadow of the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, granting the ICJA Aces a one-point victory in the entire tournament. Bromberg’s triumph in the 215-pound weight class not only won his team the 13th annual Wittenberg title, it also toppled the Frisch School—which held the lead at the outset of the final match—from its five-year dominance of the tournament.

For Aces coach Doug Klein, the tension of the contest as it went to the last match was taxing. “I don’t like drama in sports; I was dreading every minute of this,” said Klein. “But now that it’s over, wow—it’s incredible! I am unbelievably proud of this team; they worked so hard to achieve this.”

The Wittenberg Tournament, which invites Yeshiva high school wrestling teams from across the country to compete, began on Friday, February 15th and concluded Monday, February 18.

Wrestlers, coaches, parents, and fans crowded the gym to watch the championship matches on the tournament’s final day. Dr. Ellen Glickman traveled from Cleveland for the second year in a row to watch her son Raffi Weiss, who won first place in the 171-pound weight class. Glickman, an exercise physiologist who trains with her son every morning, said, “This is an outstanding tournament. The energy, enthusiasm, and camaraderie are all excellent.”

The final tally put ICJA in first place with 238 points and Frisch in second with 237, followed by the Torah Academy of Bergen County (TABC) with 203, and the Yeshiva University High School for Boys/ Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy with 148 points. Tournament coaches conferred Frisch’s Ezez Kahan with the Dominator Award and voted TABC’s Ramin Ahdoot this year’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
