Yeshiva University deeply mourns the passing of Dorothy Schachne, a longtime, cherished supporter. A YU benefactor who was awarded an honorary degree from the University in 2014, Dorothy held a deep commitment to communal service, Jewish causes, and organizations and institutions dedicated to improving people’s lives.
Dorothy and her late husband, David (also a YU honorary degree recipient), focused their support and service on the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, where they endowed the David I. and Dorothy Schachne Dean and established the Dorothy and David I. Schachne Scholarship Program. She also served on the Wurzweiler Board of Overseers.
The Schachnes’ leadership and support helped Wurzweiler dramatically expand its academic programs, community-facing initiatives and student body. As a result, they touched the lives of scores of students who have gone on to become competent, compassionate and committed social workers, improving life for thousands of clients and patients who rely on their expertise and care. Other beneficiaries of her generous and impactful philanthropy have included CancerCare, where she served for many years as a member of the Board of Trustees; Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center; and Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.
We extend our deepest condolences to Dorothy’s sons Jay (Andrea) and Sydney (Leslie) and to her grandchildren Heather, Brian, Seth, Ian and Elana.
