Jeffrey Gurock Appears on Shalom TV in Celebration of July 4th Holiday

Jun 27, 2008
-- Dr. Jeffrey S. Gurock, Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History, appears on Shalom TV, a national Jewish cable video-on-demand network, this week in celebration of the July 4 holiday. The program, which can be viewed at any time during the week June 29-July 5, presents an interview with Gurock. He gives an overview of the waves of Jewish immigration to America, highlights some of the principal Jewish figures who have contributed to the American scene, and discusses the future of American Jewish life and the continuing need for day-school education. Gurock, a noted historian who lectures on American Jewish history internationally, is the author or editor of 11 books. In 1998, A Modern Heretic and a Traditional Community: Mordechai M. Kaplan, Orthodoxy and American Judaism was awarded the biannual Saul Viener Prize from the American Jewish Historical Society for the best book written in that field. His most recently published book, Judaism's Encounter with American Sports, uses sports as a metaphor to explore the basic religious dilemmas facing the Jewish community today.
