Members of YU Security Staff Aid in Fire Rescue

Jun 24, 2004 -- Eleven Burns Security guards were honored by Community Board 12 for going above and beyond the call of duty when, on May 8, a fire broke out at 556 185th Street, the apartment building adjacent to YU’s Schottenstein Center at the Wilf Campus. YU contracts with Burns Security, which staffs all its campuses with security personnel. Each of the 11—Sgt. Gilberto Abreu, Lt. Edward Delacruz, Lt. Lester Manon, Lt. Lester Munoz, Lt. Francisco Noriega, Capt. Omar Pineda, and Security Officers Victor Fertides, Oscar Garcia, Pablo Melara, Omar Piron, and Rayson Rodriguez—helped some 35 people to safely escape from the burning building. There were no injuries, though six of the rescuers required treatment for smoke inhalation, either onsite by EMS or at nearby hospitals.
