MTA Launches New Areas of Academic Concentration

This year the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy/Yeshiva University High School for Boys (MTA) is expanding its academic programs for sophomores with three new areas of concentration: Torah Leadership, Engineering+ and Entrepreneurship. The Academic Concentration Program, spearheaded by Rabbi Dov Emerson, director of teaching and learning, allows talmidim [students]  to gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in these important subjects. “One of the great differentiators of the MTA experience is the personalized education it provides for each boy. This new program is the logical next step in delivering an outstanding and diverse learning experience,” said Rabbi Emerson. “These concentrations allow talmidim, with particular passions and interests, to take a deeper dive with a cohort of like-minded individuals under the expert tutelage of educators who are thought leaders.” In the Torah Leadership concentration, talmidim apply their Torah knowledge in ways that can impact the broader community. Under the guidance of Rabbi Michael Taubes, Rosh Yeshiva at MTA, talmidim learn how to effectively extract and communicate Torah thoughts and content.  This is achieved by developing written and oral Torah presentation skills, which encompass topic selection, researching and reading Torah sources, presenting effective divrei Torah [Torah commentaries] and shiurim [lectures] and audience engagement. The Engineering+ concentration is designed for students in STEM. Directed by Ms. Megan HL Zacks, MTA Science Chair, the Engineering+ concentration facilitates the open exchange of ideas. Talmidim challenge one another to grow, innovate, build, and create together. The cohort explores the tools and experiences of engineers in the MTA makerspace and the larger New York City community. Site visits to companies, technology vendors, college research laboratories and makerspace workshops give talmidim the chance to see how engineering is practiced in the field.

The Entrepreneurship concentration, directed by MTA alumnus Shuey Jacoby, explores how to launch a product or company from the ground up. Talmidim examine the basics of business and innovation from product development through marketing and sales and gain a fundamental understanding of business plan development. Practical, group-focused instruction emphasizes the importance and necessity of collaboration. Leveraging MTA and Yeshiva University’s tremendous alumni networks as well as the intellectual capital of the Sy Syms School of Business and the YU Innovation Lab, talmidim benefit from expert guest lecturers as well as the opportunity to see and learn from innovative companies and participate in serious hands-on learning.
