Myra A. Freeman, Lt. Gov of Nova Scotia, Speaks at Stern College for Women

Dec 2, 2004 -- Nova Scotia's Lt. Governor, Myra A. Freeman, presented the inaugural lecture of a series called "Women in Public and International Affairs" at Stern College for Women on Nov. 18. The event, sponsored by Stern's political science department, showcased Lt. Gov. Freeman, a prominent and influential woman, sharing insights with about 50 young women with perhaps their own dreams of public service careers. Regardless of what careers the students may plan, Lt. Gov. Freeman's visit proved inspiring. "I wanted to see a woman in public policy position, because I wanted to see how she balances her life, how she made it to where she is, and what choices she made," said Frumie Horowitz, an SCW senior and political science major . Frumie, whose hometown is Brooklyn, said she is not yet sure what career she will pursue. She plans an internship next year with a position in the Israeli government. She said she may like to eventually pursue a master's of public administration and would like to work for a communal services or non-profit organization. Frumie said Lt. Gov. Freeman's accomplishments serve as an excellent example for Jewish women. "She's definitely a role model," Frumie said of the Lt. Gov. "For me, as a Jewish Orthodox woman, I found the way she is able to balance a pro-active public career while keeping a traditional Jewish home very inspiring." Lt. Gov. Myra Freeman is the thirteenth Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Nova Scotia since Confederation, and the first woman to hold the position in the province's 400-year history. Her commitment to furthering the advancement of women was exemplified by the inaugural Lieutenant Governor's Symposium in May 2004, called "Women and Leadership: Helping Nova Scotia Grow." The symposium's aim was to provide young women from across the province with insight and guidance to become the leaders of tomorrow. In her brief visit to YU's Beren Campus, it appears the Lieutenant Governor accomplished that very task with yet another group of young women.
