New and Returning Students Settle in on Wilf and Beren Campuses

Aug 29, 2004
-- While New York City prepared for a national political convention, excitement of another sort was taking place on Yeshiva University's Beren Campus in Murray Hill and its Wilf Campus in Washington Heights. Hundreds of new students on both campuses, some from as far away as Morocco, France, Seattle, and St. Louis, took their first steps on an adventure that will become their college experience at Yeshiva University. Those first steps were part of YU's Orientation 2004, which began on Sunday. "I'm very excited to be here at YU and in New York City," said Jonathan Smadja of Paris. "I'm happy to be able to continue my Jewish studies in a comfortable and welcoming environment." Jonathan was accompanied by his mother, Chantal, as he made his way along Amsterdam Avenue with other young men at the Wilf Campus Sunday. Some returning students proved they were just as excited as new students. "I love YU," said Moshe Nevy, a returning junior and computer science and economics major from Grenoble, France. "I'm so happy to be back." YU's Israel Henry Beren Campus, too, welcomed students from across the globe. Sarah GuiGui, from Marseilles, France, is one of those students. "I came to YU because I wanted to pursue Judaic and secular studies," she said. "YU is the only school that allows students to do that. In France, we don't have an institution like this." Daniella Leiberman of Montreal arrived at the Beren Campus after spending a year in Israel. "I decided Stern was the place to continue my Jewish studies," she said. YU President Richard M. Joel greeted students and parents on both campuses and welcomed them into the YU family. Many new students have family ties to YU. Josh Russak, of Seattle, is the son of parents who both attended YU. His sister Jessica is a Stern alum who participated with a group of YU students in shemira for World Trade Center victims. Josh's sister, Melinda, is a senior this year at Stern. Josh plans to major in speech and communications. On hand at both the Beren and Wilf campuses Sunday were YU staff and administrators who greeted students and their families and helped students acclimate to their new surroundings.
