New Jewish Studies Program Holds Retreat

Sep 21, 2004 -- More than a dozen students enrolled in the Mechinah Program of the James Striar School of General Jewish Studies (JSS) joined faculty members and their families as well as student mentors from Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) for a weekend retreat at the Homowack Hotel, last week. The getaway, which included Selikhot services Saturday night, was an opportunity for participants to become acquainted in a relaxing Shabbat atmosphere and to prepare for the upcoming High Holidays. The Mechinah Program is a new JSS initiative headed by Rabbi Zev Reichman. It offers an array of opportunities for undergraduate men seeking to investigate Jewish learning and living. Students enrolled at RIETS serve as mentors who help program participants progress from basic to more advanced levels of learning, growth, and achievement. In addition to Rabbi Reichman, faculty members who attended the retreat were Rabbi Daniel Rapp, Rabbi Yamin Levy, and Prof. Chaim Sobel.
