President Joel and Dean Bacon Attend President Bush's Annual Hanukkah meeting With Jewish Leaders

Dec 19, 2006 -- Yeshiva University President Richard M. Joel and Karen Bacon, the Monique C. Katz Dean of Stern College for Women, were among 14 leaders in Jewish higher education and college students who met with President Bush on Monday for his annual Hanukkah meeting. President Bush chooses a different theme for his Hanukkah meeting each year and this year’s theme was the importance of a moral component in university life. The president’s remarks focused on the war on terrorism and referred to what he said was the battle against moral relativism on campus, participants said. "He spoke of the growth of a moral relativism in the world," said President Joel. "He reiterated that the battle we're involved in is not religious, because terrorists can't be God-believing people." The President traditionally meets with leaders from the Jewish community prior to the White House Hanukkah Reception. In 2001 and 2003, he met with Jewish organizational leaders. In 2002 and 2004, he met with congregational rabbis, and in 2005 he met with Jewish day school leaders.
