honors program carmiOn Wednesday, March 23, 2022, the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Honors Program at Yeshiva College hosted a talk with Rabbi Shalom Carmy, assistant professor of Jewish philosophy and Bible, as part of its ongoing Honors Luncheon Speaker series. Rabbi Carmy spoke to the students about Rabbi Shagar, whose work combines Talmudic interpretation with insights from postmodern philosophy and psychology. Rabbi Carmy discussed Rabbi Shagar’s unique approach to Judaism, which some consider controversial. Naftali Shavelson ’22YC remarked, “Rav Carmy's exploration of the works and outlook of Rav Shagar was eye-opening, provoking questions about contemporary Torah study, cultural-historical Jewish progress and the role of postmodernism in our personal, academic and spiritual lives.” Dr. Eliezer Schnall, director of the Honors program, thanked Rabbi Carmy for taking the time to speak to the students. “His presentation was insightful and highly thought-provoking, and he broadened the students’ and my own perspectives.”
