“This is a wonderful moment,” said YU President Richard M. Joel. “This is a place that advances not just ideas but civilization.” Pearl Berger, the dean of libraries, introduced the event explaining that “what the room contains is far more than physical artifacts. Rather it preserves the spirit of years gone by. The Alfred and Evelyn H. Solomon Rare Books collection will fascinate and teach far into the future.” Todd Solomon explained the connection between the rare book room and his parents. “Jews are called, by some, people of the book. My father, a graduate of Yeshiva College, personified this. He was the man of the book and my mother shares in what was my father’s fervor in the preservation of knowledge.” A reception followed the speeches as well as the unveiling of a plaque and the putting up of a mezuzah.
