Apr 16, 2004 — Sponsored by the Student Organization of Yeshiva (SOY), the Office of Student Affairs, the undergraduate student councils, and the Israel Clubs of both Yeshiva College and Stern College for Women, a Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) celebration will be held on April 26 at 7:45 pm.
The ceremony will begin at Nathan Lamport Auditorium in Zysman Hall on the Wilf Campus with a memorial for fallen soldiers and a candelight vigil.
YU President Richard M. Joel; Rav Meir Goldwicht, Joel and Maria Finkle Visiting Israeli Rosh Yeshiva; Rav Mordechai Greenberg; Rav Binny Freedman; and an Israeli soldier will speak. A Powerpoint presentation commemorating the wars Israel fought and honor soldiers will also show Israel today: its success, prosperity, and pride.
About 600 people are expected to attend, including students, faculty, and members of the board of trustees, said Hindy Poupko, president of Stern College’s Israel Club.
The evening will continue at Rubin Residence Hall with a chagigah (party) and a falafel party in the cafeteria.
“We want people to have the feeling that they’re in Israel,” said Shmulik Rosenberg, a YC sophomore and secretary of SOY. “We need to be reminded how important it is to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut.”
