Students Make Their Voices Heard on Capitol Hill

Feb 21, 2005 -- Students from Stern College for Women and Yeshiva College are heading to Washington, DC, March 6 to lobby congressmen to support Israel. Sponsored by the College Democrats, the Israel Club, the Republican Club, the Joseph Dunner Political Science Society, and the Stern College for Women Student Council – and supported by a grant by The Avi Chai Foundation – the lobbying mission came about when Devora Whitman, president of the College Democrats, and Hindy Poupko, president of the SCW Israel Club, met with a campus field organizer from The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobby. “Hindy and I had discussed doing a mission and AIPAC really helped with making it happen,” said Ms. Whitman, a Stern senior. AIPAC will conduct lobbying training sessions with the 15 participants on Feb. 22. While on Capitol Hill, they will meet with congressmen or their legislative aides to discuss such issues as Iran, the road map to peace, and disengagement; take a tour of the Israel embassy; meet with YU alumni who work on the Hill; and have briefing sessions with AIPAC before returning to campus March 7. Ms. Whitman said participants contacted congressmen to schedule meetings, and found their offices to be very receptive. Students who demonstrated leadership were chosen by a committee composed of students, including Ms. Poupko and Ms. Whitman, during winter break. “The Israel Club believes that in order to ensure that Israel will exist tomorrow, we need a strong relationship between the United States and Israel, and that begins on Capitol Hill with students,” Ms. Poupko said. Participating students are: Tova Lieberman Shira Orbach Dovid Wildman Avi Posnick Ari Fridman Ariel Rosenzveig Craig Weitzman Grant Silverstein Elissa Kempin Laya Pelzner Aviva Horowitz Yoni Perl Shushana Jachobov Devora Whitman Hindy Poupko
