Three YUHSG Students Receive Letters of Commendation for Excellent Results in Preliminary SATs

Nov 6, 2008 -- Three students at Yeshiva University High School for Girls (YUHSG) performed outstandingly on their Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests (PSAT/NMSQT), receiving letters of commendation in recognition of their academic promise. The commended students are seniors Dina Hershkovitz, of Kew Garden Hills, NY; Ayelet Parness, of New Rochelle, NY; and Hilana Smith, of West Hempstead, NY. “These students represent the caliber of young women educated here,” said Rochelle Brand, head of school at YUHSG. “I am proud of their accomplishments, their character and their integrity.” The letters are given annually to students with the highest PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test selection index scores (encompassing critical reading, mathematics and writing skills scores) qualifying them for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Of the approximately 1.5 million entrants, about 34,000 receive letters of commendation. “Since our freshmen and sophomore years, we had been preparing for the SAT once a week,” said Parness. “In our junior year, we took a course designed to tutor students for merit scholarships on the PSAT. Our professors and instructors have been wonderful in teaching us the skills needed to take the exams.” “YUHSG has helped me grow both academically and socially,” said Hershkovitz. “I believe that the student body and faculty are what truly make a good school and YUHSG excels in both capacities.”
